What’s the difference between rope and cord?

Ropes are made of multiple strands of fibres twisted together to create a strong and durable structure, and they’re usually used for heavy-duty applications like climbing or securing cargo. Cord, on the other hand, is usually a woven structure that can be referred to as a ‘braided cord’. Plus, cord is often used as a general term for a variety of materials that come in long strands. For example, cord can refer to braided fibres used for the macramé technique, for opening and closing blinds, for operating light-pull switches and much more. 

What are the different types of cords?

Since cord is such a broad term, many different types of cords can be used for a wide variety of applications. You’ll often find cords in the home as thin, braided lengths of material (such as cotton) used for operating pull cord lights, opening and closing Venetian blinds (blind cord), fitting and repairing sash windows (sash cord), upholstery, and various home decorations, such as macramé cord crafts. 

However, cords are also frequently used for outdoor applications due to their durability and versatility. Bungee cord is constructed from a synthetic outer shell and natural rubber core to ensure maximum flexibility and strength, and paracord has been used in military and survival applications for decades thanks to its unparalleled strength and versatility.
