Jute is a natural fibre produced by the Tossa jute (Corchorus Olitorius) and White jute (Corchorus Capsularis) plants. These natural fibres are collected to create jute fabric, jute rope and jute twine, with the resulting product being strong, coarse, affordable and widely available. Natural jute twine also has a very rustic look that’s often appealing for projects related to gardening and DIY crafts.
Absolutely! Jute is a natural, biodegradable fibre that will fully degrade in around 1-2 years once it’s been disposed of. Jute is also very abundant and can be grown without fertilisers and pesticides, making it a renewable resource that has minimal impact on the environment.
Jute is food-safe but is not recommended for use in an oven. If you’re looking for cooking twine, you should check out our range of butcher’s twines, which are made from food-safe, oven-safe and durable rayon. You can use jute twine to add a rustic decoration to prepared food, but don’t try to cook with it because it doesn’t do well with heat or moisture.
Jute twines and ropes can absorb up to 34% of their mass in water, leading to shrinkage while wet. If you’re planning to use your natural jute twine outside, make sure you factor in this shrinkage and look after your rope – this will help it last for around three years outdoors.
However, natural jute twine can be susceptible to rotting and deterioration if it’s exposed to too much moisture, so it may not be suitable for outdoor use in very wet or humid conditions. If your jute twine is partially sheltered, this could help it last longer.
