What are the different types of rope?

There are many common types of rope that will suit a wide variety of applications. For example, natural ropes like hemp rope, cotton rope and sisal rope are strong, aesthetically pleasing and better for the environment. Synthetic ropes such as polypropylene rope, nylon rope and polyester rope tend to be even stronger and more durable. Nylon and polyester ropes can also be used underwater, making them good choices for marine tasks.

Which is better: natural rope or synthetic rope?

Your ideal type of rope will depend on a variety of factors, such as the tasks you’re undertaking, your aesthetic preferences and the rope characteristics you need. If you’re expecting to use your ropes for tying down very heavy loads or for boating applications, you’ll need the strength, flexibility, durability and water resistance of synthetic ropes like polypropylene, nylon and polyestyer rope. However, if you need rope for internal decorative applications, you’ll probably prefer the rustic appearance and eco-friendliness of natural ropes like hemp rope, jute rope or cotton rope.

Should I choose hemp rope or cotton rope?

While both cotton rope and hemp rope are soft natural ropes, hemp rope tends to be stronger and more durable than cotton rope, it has higher tenacity and the fibres are less likely to stretch out of shape. Hemp rope is also more absorbent and insulating than cotton rope. Since hemp rope is low stretch and soft, it’s also ideal for upholstery fabric. Due to its balance of durability and suppleness it was historically favoured on ships. However, because cotton is much softer against your skin, comfortable to handle and easy to dye, it’s a better choice for things like home decorations and arts and crafts and applications where the rope is handled a lot. It is also traditionally used for sash cords where it is waxed for weatherproofing and for indoor use as pulley lines.

What is a hempex rope?

Hempex rope is also known as synthetic hemp or polyhemp rope. It’s a three-strand twisted rope made from strong polypropylene fibres, and it’s made to look and feel like a natural hemp rope. This means you can get an appealing natural look and feel whilst also benefiting from the superior strength, durability, water resistance and flexibility of polypropylene rope. This makes it the perfect rope to use for garden decking, where it looks the part amongst the natural surroundings of the garden, while retaining the hardwearing properties of a synthetic rope.
