Frequently Asked Questions About Pulley Lines

What is a pulley line?

A pulley line is a line, cord or rope that can be raised or lowered depending on your needs, typically running over a wheel to create a pulley system for lifting heavy items. Pulley lines can be used both indoors or outdoors, and are often used for lifting or hanging loads of laundry – either as a pulley washing line in the garden, or indoors to raise and lower a Victorian ceiling airer.

What is the best rope for a pulley line?

The best rope for a pulley line depends on the application.

The most popular choice for an indoor ceiling airer would be a cotton pulley line, as they have a traditional appearance and are soft on the hands when raising and lowering.

Waxed cotton pulley lines are weatherproof, and, as such, they are a popular choice for outdoor use as a traditional pulley washing line and inside sash windows as sash cords.

However, where strength and additional durability is required, synthetic pulley lines are best.

What is the strongest pulley line?

Nylon pulley lines are considered to be the strongest type of pulley line. This is due to them being made from strong nylon fibres, which can hold excessively more weight than their natural counterparts without snapping or fraying. Nylon is also waterproof and resistant to chemical and biological degradation.

Should a pulley washing line be tight?

Yes! Maintaining a tight pulley washing line is paramount for keeping your clean clothes off the ground and high in the breeze to dry. This in turn prevents dirt and debris from contaminating your freshly washed items, and helps them dry quicker. Once you have got your pulley washing line to the desired tautness, you need to lock it in place using a cleat or turnbuckle.
